A Message to Football Season Ticket Holders from the R Fund
Due to the postponement of the fall athletics, season ticket holders will have the opportunity to reallocate their balance. We ask that you consider allocating your balance in portion or entirety to a tax-deductible donation supporting the Rutgers Scholarship Fund. We are all in this together, which is why we developed the Scarlet Knights Ticket to Success Campaign to provide great opportunities for R Family to win with us.
Over the last few months, Rutgers Athletics, in coordination with the Big Ten® Conference and with advice from public health officials, has worked tirelessly to provide a safe return to competition for 650+ Scarlet Knights. More recently, the Big Ten announced the postponement of the fall sports season, including football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, and volleyball. This decision-making process, one of the hardest our leaders have ever had to undertake, was always based in the interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes and the broader community.
In the wake of the decision to postpone the season, we, like all of our peer institutions, are facing a financial crisis. Ticket purchases, annual R Fund contributions, and endowment support represent more than $17 million of the athletic department’s revenue in 2019-20. We rely on these revenues to fund the scholarships, programs, and opportunities for our 650+ Scarlet Knight student-athletes to develop and compete at the highest level.
We want to ensure that we continue to develop our student-athletes both on and off the field so that you can be proud and excited to root on your Scarlet Knights! Without further investment from our community, the athletics program we love as Scarlet Knights is at risk.
Benefits of Reallocating Season Ticket Funds
We ask that you support our student-athletes by reinvesting your season tickets and per seat contributions as a fully tax-deductible donation for 2020. In addition to the tax benefits, donations to the Scarlet Knights Ticket to Success Campaign will earn you bonus priority points for the 2021-22 fiscal year, lifetime bonus priority points, season ticket discounts in 2021 and much more (see below).
Benefits are provided based on the percentage of your relocatable balance you elect to turn into an athletic donation. If, for example, you have a paid balance on your account of $1,000 and decide to donate the full $1,000 toward the Rutgers Scholarship Fund, you will receive:
- 50 Bonus Priority Points for 2021 (($1,000 / 100) X 5)

How it Works
Season ticket holders will receive an email the first week of September to determine their account balance reallocation selection. The Rutgers Athletics Ticket Office will continue to monitor state, local, and conference developments in the coming months. As there is further clarity on a spring season and if permitted to host fans, more information on the ticketing process will be provided. Please note that the Provident Bank Stadium Club members will also receive a separate form associated with their membership(s) and reallocation options.
Your Financial Impact
Rutgers Athletics and the R Fund remain committed to championship athletics in the face of this health crisis and its impact.
In response to the financial effects of the pandemic, Rutgers Athletics has executed significant budget reductions in addition to taking part in the Universitywide workshare furlough program to help further mitigate the economic impact.
We have taken many steps, but there is more work to be done to ensure financial sustainability.
Together, we have the opportunity to emerge from this health crisis as a stronger community and continue our positive momentum. As we plan for the road ahead, season ticket holder and R Fund donor contributions are vital to providing valuable resources for student-athletes and sustaining Rutgers Athletics’ future.
R Fund donor and season ticket holder support of football, men’s and women’s basketball, and wrestling accounts for 20% percent of Rutgers Athletics’ operating budget. Ticket purchases, annual R Fund contributions, and endowment support are critical, providing over $17 million of the athletics department’s revenue in 2019-20. Your Rutgers Scholarship Seat Fee, which makes up a portion of your season ticket payment, directly supports the scholarship needs of hundreds of student-athletes across all 24 varsity programs. Scholarship funding continues to be one of the largest annual expenses for Rutgers Athletics as student-athlete scholarships accounted for $16.8 million in 2019-20. We rely on the support provided by donors and ticket holders to achieve these goals in moving Rutgers Athletics forward, both in the Big Ten and nationally.
